So a few years ago I made this for Youtube:
Since that time, it has had nearly 2.5 million views.
I have no problem admitting that it is dated, and honestly I don’t even think it’s that good now. But it still gets views, and I still receive a lot of questions about it. I even got a job because of this thing. So I’m grateful for its existence, but let’s face it…it can be so much better. In every way.
So I’ve decided to redo it. I’m going to make a new tutorial for an energy blast. My goal is that it will look something like this:
I’m going to do my best to create it entirely in After Effects, but that might not be possible. If I must, I will incorporate Cinema 4D or 3DS Max into the workflow. But it’s something to look forward to. I know I am excited to leave that old tutorial in the dust.

What’s the best substitute effect for “shine” ?
I’m using AE cs4
The easiest is probably to use Effects > Stylize > Glow. You can change the glow colors to be whatever you want. Or you can use the “lightsaber method.” Basically you make multiple copies of the layer, blur the copies that are behind the original, and then colorize them however you like using Levels or Hue and Saturation.

I have yet to see your first After Effects Energy Blast tutorial video, however, I think I will watch it for a reference and to get an idea of how to use After Effects for that purpose. I very much look forward to your revision of the original tutorial and encourage you to use whatever you see fit to realize your visions.
